Top Ten Tuesday-2014 Bookish Resolutions 1/7/14

toptentuesday

In the spirit of the new year and new beginnings and new resolutions, The Broke and the Bookish are asking for out 2014 Bookish Resolutions. I’ve got plenty.

1. Match my 2013 Goodreads Challenge of 200 books. I was finishing my 200th book of 2013 at 7pm on December 31! So, 200 books read/listened to in 2014!

2. Participate in the Random Reads meme, hosted by I’m Loving Books. The idea is to use a random number generator to select a book that has been languishing on your TBR list. I love this idea!

3. Write more book reviews. Seriously. I totally dropped the ball on this one in 2013.

4. Read books recommended by my book club students. I am always picking books for them, so I decided to see what they would pick for me. I will have them pick a title for me each month and I will report back at our next meeting. For February I am reading The Eye of Minds by James Dashner.

5.  A-Z Authors. I decided to make my 2014 books page here as an A-Z authors list. Kind of random, but it’s something different.

6. Pay more attention to my NetGalley books. See #3. The new rule is request, read, review. Repeat. No more request, request, request….

7. Stop reading if I don’t like it. This was a resolution a couple of years ago and I love it! There are so many awesome books out there and I no longer feel the need to waste my time on ones that aren’t.

8. Continue to read outside my comfort zone. I would like to read a variety of genres each month. Last year I read a ton of fantastic nonfiction and I really want to keep that up. I need to work on reading more teen mysteries and teen historical fiction.

9. Read from the Youth Media Awards list. I am not sure how many I read last year. This year I will keep track!

10. Read 2014 Debuts. Last year I read 19 2013 debuts. Hopefully I can do just as well this year. I need to find myself a list!

Happy Reading!

Mondays with Megan-Baby, It’s Cold Outside! 1/6/14

There is no use fighting with Mother Nature. It’s freaking freezing cold out. And getting colder. And then it will be over and we can get back to our regularly scheduled winter. In the mean time, all we can do is wait it out. I am fortunate enough to be able to wait it out at home with my nephews, who are home from school. Kids are so lucky. We did some yoga, made french toast for breakfast, and now are all snuggled up watching some TV. I plan to read for a while at some point. Though I sense Cabin Fever is already setting in. I could be in for a long day…Back to the task at hand. My 2014 reading is off to a great start.

Finished:

bzrk reloaded sweet tooth wild game attachments

I can’t believe it took me so long to get to the second BZRK book, BZRK Reloaded by Michael Grant. The battle for humanity is being fought at the nano level. This series raises fascinating ethical questions. If you have the power to alter the brains of humans to make them “better,” should you? Also, it is so creepy! I loved it and am ready for more. I also finished the Sweet Tooth series by Jeff Lemire. We finally learn what the heck is going on with all the hybrid babies and the answer, while satisfying, was surprising. If you need something to read while waiting for a new Walking Dead, give this one a try! Finally, I finished by first book of 2014, Attachments, by Rainbow Rowell. After reading eleanor & park and Fangirl, I just had to go back to the beginning and pick up her debut novel. I was not disappointed. It was clever and funny and sweet. I read it in two days. I can’t wait for more Rainbow Rowell in 2014!

Current Audio:

shadow and bone fall of five

In my car I have started Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo. I have been listening to The Fall of Five by Pittacus Lore when I walk the dogs. I don’t know what it is about this series. It’s so compelling that I am completely willing to overlook the flaws. I really need know how things end, though I suspect I will have to wait a while for that. Book 5 (out of how many?) comes out this summer. Sigh.

Currently Reading:

stranger thing breath of frost

This week I plan to finish A Stranger Thing, the sequel to Mothership by Martin Leicht. I will also finish (I swear!) A Breath of Frost by Alyxandra Harvey

On Deck:

How are you staying warm?

Random Reads, January 2014 Small Town Sinners

Hi friends! I am trying some new things for the old blog in the new year. Looking back over 2013 I realized that I totally dropped the ball on writing book reviews. I sort of have a plan to remedy that, it will just be a matter of forcing myself to stick to a schedule. So, look for more book reviews in 2014. I also found a new-to-me meme (love those book memes!) that I am going to join each month.

random reads

I’m Loving Books hosts a monthly Random Reads challenge, in which participants using a random number generator such as Random.org to pick a book from their To Be Read lists. I keep my TBR list on Goodreads. The book that was picked for me was Small Town Sinners by Melissa C. Walker. This book was #7 out of 203 and was added October 3, 2011.

small town sinners

From Goodreads.com: “The story of Lacey Anne Byers, a small town girl who is excited to star in Hell House, her church’s annual haunted house of sin, until a childhood friend reappears and makes her question her faith.”

I will read this and have a review for you in February!

Happy Reading!
