Mondays with Megan-Summer Reading Time is Here! 6/16/14

It’s here! On of my favorite times of the year at the library! Summer reading! Yes, all those exclamation points *are* necessary, thank you very much. Summer reading may conjure of images of being forced to read dusty old classics, but here at the library it is all fun and prizes. Reader of all ages can find a program, so be sure to stop by the Children’s Department and Adult Reference and we will get children, teens, and adults all signed up. Teen readers will have a chance to will a weekly basket full of goodies. This week’s basket has the movie Goonies and the book Cinder by Marissa Meyer, plus plenty of candy, coupons for free Chipotle, and much, much more. For a chance to win all you have to do is read. Fill out a slip for each book, drop it in the entry box at the AV Desk and cross your fingers. Easy, right? We’ll even give you prize just for signing up. See you soon! P.S. Adults, your summer reading is very similar-entry slips, awesome goodie baskets, prizes for signing up…come visit us soon!

mondayreading new monday

Here is my It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? report. Be sure to stop by Books Journey and Teach Mentor Texts for more great reading suggestions.

Finished:

10% happierheaven is for real return of the maharajahero's guide outlaw

  • 10% Happier by Dan Harris is a compelling memoir about the anchorman’s struggle with anxiety and how his discovery and practice of meditation helped calm his mind. This book definitely inspired me to continue learning how to meditate.
  • Heaven is For Real by Todd Burpo tell the story of the author’s son’s experience with the afterlife. This book was definitely not for me. I completely understand why readers are fascinated by this story, but I just kept seeing gaping holes and major flaws with this story. I am neither an evangelical Christian or a skeptic, but this one didn’t work.
  • Fairest: Return of the Maharaja by Sean Williams is just the latest installment of the Fables spin-off. I am always pleased to be in the world of Fables, but this one was more about Prince Charming than the leading lady. Not horrible, but not may favorite. I do look forward to what come after this installment.
  • The Hero’s Guide to Being an Outlaw by Christopher Healy is the final chapter in the League of Princes trilogy. This book was epic. And huge. And all over the place! I am sad to see them go, but I have to say, the ending leaves room for more…maybe. Hopefully.

Current Audio:

storied life francona

I am so close to finishing The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry. It is so good! I am about half way through Francona. It’s pretty interesting. I did not realize what divas some of these players are/were. I suppose that is just naive on my part, but really?!?

Currently Reading:

originals bzrk 3 in the shadows

I just started The Originals and In the Shadows. I am still slowly plugging away at BZRK. Not because it isn’t awesome, because it is.

On Deck:

Happy Reading!

  1. I’ve never read any of the League of Princes trilogy. Must remedy that.

  2. I also read A.J. Fikry this week. It’s SO good!

  3. I need to sign up for the summer reading program and get my free ice cream coupon! Loved Heroes’ Guides, and am very tempted by Fikry, even though there are so many other things I Should be reading!

  4. I adored A.J. Fikry, so glad to hear you like it, too. Your library’s summer reading sounds awesome. I don’t think mine does anything for adults, but do know they have a child program. Thanks for the honest reviews, will be sure to look for those you enjoyed. I still haven’t read a ‘hero’s guide’. I have the first one, but just haven’t read it yet. Enjoy your summer reading!

  5. I read the first League of Princes book on a trip to Montana when it was new, but never got to the rest. I may have to pick them up for summer reading since we will be heading to Montana again. 🙂

  6. I’ve read a few titles from the Fables series and I enjoyed it greatly – along with The Unwritten which I found quite fascinating. This one though “Fairest” did receive a few mixed reviews from comic-friends. Thank you for sharing all these titles, Megan!
