Dewey’s 24-Hour Read-a-Thon October 18, 2014

Good morning! It’s time for another Dewey’s 24 Hour Read-a-Thon. Like last year, I will posting everything here throughout the day on one giant post, so scroll down for the new stuff! We like to start the day with a little getting to you sessions:

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today?

I am reading in Cleveland, Ohio, where it is gray and rainy and cold. the PERFECT weather for a read-a-thon, if you ask me!

2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to?

I have been hoarding books like crazy for weeks now! I am starting the day off with The Iron Trial by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare.
3) Which snack are you most looking forward to?

It is now tradition that the day starts with fancy coffee and breakfast sandwiches at out local coffeeshop. I also have some honey sesame stick to contribute. Stacey was on snack duty this time, so it will be a surprise to me.
4) Tell us a little something about yourself!

I am a Teen Librarian and I love my job. When I am not facilitating a book club or making candy sushi, I am usually at home with my neurotic dog, Kevin. I usually enjoy gardening, but this year it just didn’t happen and the weeds took over. I will be spending all next wee resisting the urge to set fire to my back yard! I like to putz around in the kitchen and am excited for the arrival of soup season. I am often found reading AND watching tv at the same time, but I do love disconnecting everything and hitting the mat for some yoga. This is my seventh time participating!
5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to?

I feel like a seasoned read-a-thoner by now and I can finally say, that this is one unpredictable day! I haven’t completed 24 hours in ages and this year may be no different. We’ll see what happens!

Happy Reading!

It’s Hour 4 already! I think it’s finally time to do a little update and participate in an mini-challenge. This hour’s mini-challenge is Quotable Quotes. I chose a quote from my first book of the day, The Iron Trial by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare. So far it is difficult to not compare it to Harry Potter.

HOUR 6 ALREADY?!? I am more than half way through my first book. I don’t really feel a big rush this time around. I am pausing for a mini-challenge, and then maybe a sandwich. This hour’s challenge is to name our read-a-thon. The Geeky Book Blogger is hosting this one. Using my stack of books I have decided to call my Read-a-thon: My Sister Can’t Talk About the Prophecy Read-a-thon. I used these books to get that name:

My Sister Lives on the Mantlepiece by Annabel Pitcher
Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant? by Roz Chast
Gregor and the Prophecy of Bane by Suzanne Collins

Hour 8 is great! I just finished my first book, The Iron Trial by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare. What a major disappointment! Time to shake it off and move on. Next up, a nonfiction graphic novel. Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant by Roz Chast has been longlisted for the 2014 National Book Award for nonfiction. I hope I like it!

Hour 12!

Mid-Event Survey:
1. What are you reading right now?

Killer Instinct by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

2. How many books have you read so far?

I have finished one and 2/3 of a second, but it is very sad so I am taking mini breaks.

3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?

El Deafo by Cece Bell

4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?

Tons! I am not stressing out about this event. I have been enjoying my interruptions!

5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?

That we are already half done!

Hour 14: my reading pal and I spent all of hour 13 and some of hour 14 having a lovely dinner. Now I am home and in jammies and ready to see how much longer I last. This hour’s mini-challenge is cover colors. I chose four that I have recently read that have red and black covers:

ruin and rising evil librarian blood of my blood through the woods

Hour 16: I have finished by second book, Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant? by Roz Chast. There were tears…I have moved on to my third book of the event, Killer Instinct by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. This hour’s challenge is a Pet Parade! This is Kevin. This is actually one of the first pictures I took of him after bringing him home from the shelter. He is a three-year-old golden retriever/chow mix. He is a hot mess of neuroses and fear, but he has made lots of progress in our 2 years together!

  1. I agree. Perfect weather for a readathon. Hope you have a fabulous time.

If you need a little singing boost as you read along: Here’s Singing My Way Through the Readathon!

  2. Today does feel like the perfect day to read. Grey, damp, and just windy enough to let the pages fly.

Anything good to eat today yet? Just about to settle into veggies and dip. (Team Marquez)

  3. I think that taking a casual approach to this read-a-thon is the perfect way to do it!!!! I hope that you are having lots of fun with some great books 🙂 Keep up the great work!

  4. I am reading from Cincinnati – I had to give a shout out to a fellow Ohioian (is that how you spell it)! Our rain started about 4, but it’s been cold so I agree the perfect day for a read-a-thon!

  5. The time goes by so fast. It is hard to believe that it’s already half way over. I’ve loved every second so far and it looks like you have too. Happy reading!

  6. Hi Megan! Shaina here with some RAT cheer for you. 🙂

I too cannot believe we’re halfway through the read-a-thon! This is my first and between reading, cheering and having to go to work for a bit, I’m amazed at how fast it’s flown!

Honey sesame treats are one of my favorite things, and I hope you’ve been enjoying plenty today.

Happy second half of Dewey’s to you! #rahrahreadathon

  7. I like the sound of those sesame snacks! Happy reading into the night…

  8. I want to get my hands on El Deafo. I also had some sad books, although I should’ve known what I was getting in for from the titles (for heaven’s sake, one was called “The President Has Been Shot!”). Happy reading!

The readathon is definitely always unpredictable! I hope you’ve been having a great day so far, and that the rest is just as fun! Happy reading!

  10. Kevin is a BEAUTIFUL dog!!!! Thanks for being part of The Pet Parade!

  11. Hope you are having a fun time so far! Having any great snacks? what about challenges did you enter any? Try to keep awake and remember count the fun not the pages. Try to have a good time and not get to caught up in goals. Hope you have a fun rest of the read-a-thon!
