Broken Hearts, Fences, and Other Things to Mend by Katie Finn
May 14, 2014
Feiwel and Friends
Hardcover 352 pgs

What it’s about:

Summer is off to a terrible start for Gemma. Not only did her perfect boyfriend dump her, but her mother is shipping her off the Hamptons to stay with her dad. Gemma doesn’t object to time with her dad, lazing by the pool, or lounging on the beach, but she is still dreading the trip. She is terrified of returning to the place where she did the worst thing she has ever done in her life. The Hamptons is where she ruined everything for the girl who was once her best friend. Of course Hallie is there, and so is her hot brother, but when they “meet” again for the first time in five years a case of mistaken identity provides Gemma with an opportunity to right a wrong that has weighed on her conscience for years.

Why you might like it:

If you like a good comedy of errors, then you will probably find this first book in a planned series to be entertaining. Are you a fan of light, summery beach reads? Broken Hearts is certainly beach-read material! It even takes place at the beach! Are you a fan of Morgan Matson? If so, you probably already know that Morgan Matson IS Katie Finn. If you didn’t, surprise! Now, let’s talk redemption, revenge, and really awesome BFFs. Check, check, and check. Josh, the love interest is pretty great too. At times it is quite predictable, but Finn offers up just enough twists to keep you doubting yourself. As you can see, this book has a lot going for it and yet, I was not a fan. Now, before you disregard all the nice (and totally true) things I have just said, keep in mind that I am not a teen reader! That’s all. As an adult reader this just didn’t click for me, but I know plenty of readers who will devour this one!

Want more like this?

For more revenge stories you might want to try Burn For Burn by Jenny Han, Ten by Gretchen McNeil, Some Girls Are by Courtney Summers, The Hate List by Jennifer Brown, and Boys, Girls, and Other Hazardous Material by Rosalind Wiseman. Most of these have a more serious tone than Broken Hearts. Looking for the lighter side? Try Nantucket Blue by Leila Howland or Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour by Morgan Matson.

Happy Reading!
